When I was growing up Thanksgiving marked the beginning of the holiday season. Santa didn't arrive in the mall until after he waved to the crowds at the tail end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Christmas carols weren't piped into the stores until first thing Friday morning.
Thanksiving was still remembered as a day to give to thanks for the blessings in your life. It's one day that has no religious connections, everyone comes to the table with open hearts and appreciation for another year gone by. Maybe it wasn't the best year, maybe it was - but it's always been a day of family and friends and hopes for the future.
Now?
Christmas trees and holiday music have been in the stores for weeks. Christmas movies and specials have taken oven channels like Hallmark and ABC-Family (and btw, I have nothing against the holiday romances - I love them and if they were on all year, I'd watch them!) My neighborhood is already filled with houses dressed in their festive holiday light displays. If I see another "black-friday" ad, I think I might scream. I don't remember my mother ever leaving the house at 4am the day after Thanksgiving to beat her way through the crowds for that perfect gift. Back then, we didn't have list a mile long that required my parents to go into debt for the entire year either.
What happened to enjoying each holiday in it's time? Why can't we revel in baking pumpkin pies, making a great gravy to drown the turkey and stuffing and learning to give thanks for the people we share our lives with? Sadly, it's all stress, shopping and checking one holiday off the list to get to the next.
This year I made myself a promise that come Thanksgiving morning I would be deadline free. I would have my manuscript off my desk and in the editor's email in-box so I could sit back and be thankful. There will be no Christmas music in my house until Thanksgiving morning. Not one strand of tinsel will be pulled from the attic until Thanksgiving has run it's course. How about you? Will you slow down and enjoy the holiday and remember why we celebrate it? Or are you planning your dinner early so you get enough sleep to be out the door by 4?
Whatever your plans. How ever you choose to spend it. Enjoy your day.
