National Nutrition Month

I often joke that my diet consists of two food groups, chocolate and coffee, but since my recent health scare and the subsequent discussion with the doctor that I really should be getting more fiber in my diet I've had to consider those two food groups might not be enough!

I've also been forced to accept the fact that sitting at the computer writing all day can NOT in any way be considered exercise. (I have been told reaching for the coffee cup, doing butt crunches while sitting on the chair and even crossing the kitchen to refill the coffee cup are not real exercises..bah!)

I guess it's time for some changes.  I've started looking at ways to get more fiber in my diet and every Monday I'll be posting something that I've found. I've also been talked into walking every day - gasp! As hard as it sounds, I've been assured that the emails, the blogs, my writing groups and yes, even my manuscript will be just fine without me if I'm not in constant contact with them over the 'net. (I've promised to only listen to music while I'm walking and NOT to check my email!)

First stop today: Read about National Nutrition Month at their website: http://www.eatright.org/nnm/

Facts about fiber:

Fiber, in basic terms, is the indigestible parts of plant foods. It is the husk on the grain of wheat, the thin strands in celery, the crunch in the apple, the casings on edible seeds. Fiber helps to protect you from heart disease (yes, even women get heart disease so listen up ladies!), cancer, and digestive problems. Depending on the type of fiber (yes, there are more than one!), it lowers cholesterol, helps with weight control, and regulates blood sugar. The point here? This is one nutrient you don't want to miss! But did you know most people get only 12-15 grams of fiber a day-- and that's below the recommended 25-30 grams. So if you're cutting the carbs for weight loss, you might also be cutting the fiber and that's not a good thing.

Here's how to sneak "good carbs" and extra fiber into your daily diet with a minimum of effort.

Eat cereal every day for breakfast.  Aim for a whole grain, unsweetened cereal (so, Captain Crunch is probably out?) with at least 4 grams of fiber a serving. Just eating any cereal might be enough, however. A University of California study found that cereal eaters tend to eat more fiber and less fat than non-cereal eaters. Healthy, high-fiber cereals you might want to consider include Kellogg's All-Bran Original, Kashi GOLEAN, and Kellogg's Raisin Bran.

OR, how about a muffin? Here's the original Kellogg's All-Bran Muffin Recipe

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups Ready-To-Eat Cereal All-Bran® Original
1 1/4 cups fat-free milk
1 egg
1/4 cup

vegetable oil

Directions

1. Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

2. In large mixing bowl, combine KELLOGG'S ALL-BRAN cereal and milk. Let stand about 2 minutes or until cereal softens. Add egg and oil. Beat well. Add flour mixture, stirring only until combined. Portion evenly into twelve 2 1/2-inch muffin pan cups coated with cooking spray.

3. Bake at 400° F about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Note

VARIATION:
For muffins with reduced calories, fat and cholesterol, use 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons oil and substitute 2 egg whites for 1 egg.

VARIATION: For muffins with reduced fat and cholesterol, substitute 2 egg whites for 1 egg and 1/4 cup sweetened applesauce (or 2 oz. jar bananas baby food) for 1/4 cup vegetable oil. (Muffin texture may vary slightly from The Original All-Bran Muffins recipe.)

Thanks for stopping by the blog today! I'm glad you're here and I hope you learned something new that or found something entertaining that brings you back again. Have a great day!

Got Drugs?

The Meds

We've got drugs, drugs and more drugs.

And a teenager with an attitude.

My life is complete.

Between our visit last week to the doctor and our visit just a few days ago, I think I walked out of the office with an entire prescription pad full of medications, instructions and notes to the school on what the Middle-Guy can and cannot do.

Thank god for the iTouch I got for Christmas. I was able to load up all the details (yes, my friends, organization!) because I damn straight needed an agenda to keep track of all the different times the kid needs to be medicated and all the different requirements for each one.

So, this morning being the wonderful mom I am (no, that is not sarcasm, I really am wonderful  ) I got the Middle-Guy up early enough to get ready for school and eat breakfast - one of the meds specifically says, "take with food."  Of course eating breakfast is not the top priority of my teenager when a few more minutes in bed is the option - which led to the following conversation two minutes before the bus was due to arrive:

ME: "You aren't suppose to take those two little pills on an emtpy stomach."

MiddleGuy: "I didn't. I took it with Vitamin Water."

ME: "That's not food. Take a granola bar to the bus stop."

MG: He left the room (I'm sure there was eye rolling, but I can't be positive)

ME: Followed him. "Toast? Cereal? You still have two minutes."

MG: Back in the kitchen he takes out the Corn Flakes in a tupperware container, flips open the lid and shoves his hand inside. One handful of flakes gets shoved in his mouth. He smiles. "Cereal. Done."

Why do I bother?

We go back to the doctor next week to check the progress with the new meds. I'm thinking of asking for a little something for myself

I’m Honored.

The very lovely and uber talented Gina Ardito bestowed this award upon me yesterday, I'm flattered!

This award originated from The Scholastic Scribe, whose father suggested she sign up for the High School Journalism Program because she wasn’t strong in math.

And as anyone who's been in the blogosphere more than a week knows, the award comes with a few rules. (1) I must confess to 10 things you might not know about me and (2) I must pass this award on to a few other lucky recipients.  Got it?  Let's go...

1. I HATE coconut (unless it's in a pina colada!)

2. I sing alone in my car, cause I can't carry a tune and am sick of people asking me not to sing.

3. I am NOT to be trusted with tools. The hub has had to lock up anything that holds tools in our house - give me a screwdriver (or heaven forbid, a hammer) and trouble and destruction are not far behind.

4. I'm a girly-girl. Give me anything purple and I'll love it.

5. I have a thing for bags and I'm not talking pocketbooks - I'm mean tote bags! If you're trying to sell me something, if it comes with a tote bag - I'll probably buy it.

6. I want to be a vegetarian - but I live with a family of meat lovers who have remained steadfast in their desire to NOT give up meat.

7. I am not good with directions, I refuse to listen to my GPS (because she's wrong ) and often find myself lost - even close to home.

8. When I lived in San Diego I hardly ever stopped for red lights. Not because I never hit a red light, but because I usually forgot to look for them. Where I'm from traffic lights hang across the intersections - they are NOT on the side of the road - on a pole. So in my defense, I didn't mean to run all those lights - it just happened. (I also went the wrong way on a one way street and ended up on rail road tracks - but that's another story for another day!)

9. My husband will NOT get in the car if I'm driving (neither will my parents after one particularly harrowing ride in San Diego, but again, a story for another day.) I'll assume the reason they won't drive with me is #8 and #9 and leave it at that.

10.  I'm always cold. I wear my flannel pjs all year long, I wear a sweatshirt to the beach to the summer. If it's under 90, I'm probably wearing a sweater.

Probably a lot more than you really wanted to know, but there it is folks. Just a few of the quirky things that make me, me. So now it's time for me to pass along this illustrious award on to a new blogging home. My victims are a few of my fellow Passionate Critters:  Jennifer Shirk, Penny Dune, and R.M. Gilbert.

Have fun girls!

It’s A Pajama Day

I'll admit one of the best things about being a writer is the ability to give in to those hermit tendancies I often try to stuff deep down for the sake of the family who expects me to actually leave the house.

Today is NOT one of those days!

The kids are off from school, the hubster is off on a business trip for the next few days and the weather outside is slushy, rainy and cold - the perfect kind of day to stay home, watch movies, scrapbook with my daughter and get my butt kicked by my sons in the latest mmrpg (massive multi-player role playing game - I think  ) I thought my writing acronyms were hard to keep straight - the ones the boys toss at me make my eyes rolls back in confusion.

So, yes, today I will be the romance writer of your imagination - I will of course be garbed in my flannel pajamas, robe and fuzzy pink slippers.  I'll drink gallons of coffee and chocolate wrappers we be scattered across my desk! (Honestly, this is not what I do everyday - really, LOL)

Enjoy your day, I know I'll enjoy mine!

The Un-Sexy Valentine

Nefarious ~ adj ~ extremely wicked

Today's Word Goal ~ 1000 words

Today's Coffee ~ Plain, ordinary Columbian Supreme

Valentine's Day is one close to the romance writer's heart and I'm no exception. I'm all for the sexy lingerie, the chocolates and the flowers. I've gotten my share of long-stem roses delivered to the office before I was a stay-at-home mom (now they come home with the hubby instead.)

Valentine's Day evokes images of scrumptous dinners, fabulous wines and satin sheets...

Valentine's Day does NOT make me think of this...

How about you? Is this on your list of "must-haves?"The Hoodie-Footie

A day with Oreo

Lackadaisical ~ adj ~ Showing lack of spirit or interest. Listless

Today's Writing Goal ~ 800 Words

Today's Coffee ~ French Vanilla

If you are expecting a blog about cookies, click away now.

Oreo is my cat.

Or as he is most frequently called in my house "the king" (a view I should add that is NOT shared by the hubby!)

The Oreo came into our lives two years ago this past Christmas when a reluctant hubby agreed to my plea to visit the local shelter.

Even though he's allergic to cats, we found ourselves in the kitten area of the shelter and all three kids were instantly in love. But to say we picked Oreo would be wrong. He most definitely picked us.

Sticking his little paws through the cage, he tapped our shoulders while we held the other kittens and cats up for adoption. He purred (so loud in fact, his cage tag was marked "Extra Loud Purr."

We took that little 6 pound cat home and it didn't take him long to figure out he had us wrapped around his paws!

Two years later, he's not six pounds anymore! He's over 20 and spoiled rotten!

He's curious and lazy, purrs so loud you'd swear a motorboat had parked next to you on the couch, and he's a sucker for a tummy-rub.

I've had several cats over the years and can tell you most have been aloof and unless I was feeding them didn't much care for me... but not my Oreo. He sits are my feet when I write, attacks the printer with gusto when my manuscripts are printing out and lays across my desk blocking the view of my monitor whenever the mood strikes.

He's also been begging for a guest spot on the blog ... He can be quite persuasive so look for some thoughts from Oreo coming next week.

He's still testing out his tagline and his on-screen persona. When you're a cat that sleeps 18 hours a day, some things just can't be rushed. ;)

Have a great day.

Social Media Overload

kibosh ~ n ~ (slang)  ~ end, to silence, get rid of

Today's Writing Goal ~ 800 words

Today's Coffee ~ Green Mountain Dark Roast Hazelnut

Maybe the title of this post should be "social media whore" because that would certainly sum up how I feel lately. Just in case you missed any of the buttons on my sidebar (over there to the right - LOL) I am on Twitter, have a facebook profile and a facebook fan page, obviously I've got the website and the blog.

So you'd think that would be enough.

Well, since I am the social media whore - I've got all those things for the my crit group too. The passionate critters can be found not only at their blog and member's only forum, but you can join our "group" on facebook or follow us on twitter!

As if that isn't enough... being the President Elect of my local RWA, Dunes & Dreams, I've also signed up the group for all the above! You can follow us on twitter or fan us facebook or read our blog!

I'm guessing I am not invisible on the 'net

Stop by and see me, become a fan or tweet me or one of the groups above, let me know all my efforts to expose myself are working!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to a New Year!

So far the new year has been cold and filled with way too much snow and ice for my liking. While I huddle at my desk in my favorite robe with my fingers wrapped around my warm cup of coffee I think about spring and the warmer weather, all the things I'd like to accomplish this year and I also find myself amazed at how fast the past year went.

In 2009 I co-founded Dunes & Dreams Romance Writers, an Eastern Long Island Chapter of the RWA with two of the best writing friends a girl could ask for (Gina Ardito and Candace Gold.) A true labor of love, we've grown in 12 short months from the three of us at a December 2008 lunch with a few ideas on the table to 18 members strong with online workshops, monthly meetings packed with craft and support to plans for a conference and a contest! WOW!

Over the past year my oldest got his driving license, was the salutatorian of his class and started college! Next, just when I thought we'd be opening a guitar store in my other son's bedroom, in 2009 we welcomed an electronic keyboard and a drum set into the mix. And this past summer my daughter discovered her love of the stage in her first speaking part in a local community theater group!  The hubby and I celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary this past November, proud of our three kids and the life we've made.

As we welcome in 2010 I look forward to many things, both personally and professionally. I wish you all peace, good health and happiness.
