Today's Word: Debonair

(adj) having a carefree manner; courteous, gracious, charming

Maybe I'm dating myself here, but when I hear the word debonair, the first face that pops into my head is Cary Grant.

So, a little backstory might be order here. When I was little my Dad worked nights. My mom would iron (what's that? I don't think I own one of those weird devices...) and I would keep her company while we watched a movie on TV.

I grew up with the Cary Grant.

His charm, his wit, his just all around gentleman screen persona won me over quickly and so, to this day if you say debonair - I'm gonna respond, Cary Grant. (Although Johnny Depp is a close second, something about that man...um...yeah... )

I don't necessarily think of debonair as drop-dead gorgeous either. It's more of a aura, an attitude and sense of strength and confidence. It's the easy smile, the warm looks, the ability to mingle with both sexes, but exude a certain grace and charm with women that is not lecherous or conniving. A debonair man to me doesn't give off the "I gotta get into your pants" attitude, it's more a "I'm interested in all of you" vibe that makes him stand out from the crowd.

This week while you use the word, think about who you give that title to today. Who would instantly pop into your head and why?

Now to the fun stuff, tomorrow I'm headed to the annual Romance Writers Conference - this year being held in Orlando at the beautiful Disney Swan and Dolphin Hotel! I will be blogging, twittering and posting to my facebook fan page randomly the whole time I'm there (Tuesday - Sunday)

One of the best things about conference would be all the FREE books! Many of them signed by the authors. And what does that mean to you, my faithful blog reader? It means over the next few weeks or months (you never know how many books I'll be coming home with!) I'll be giving away some of those books as commenting prizes. Rules to win books are the same as the weekly Writing Inspiration Friday prizes - which means you only have to comment to get your name in the bowl-o-contestants! (and if you follow the Saucy Scribe by email and/or GoogleFriend - both located on the sidebar - you get extra chances for each comment!)

Seven us from Dunes & Dreams RWA are headed down there, some of us sharing rooms and flights!

I've got appointments with agents, I've got lists upon lists of what I need to remember to bring, I'm ready to pitch, network, drink and put some of the online names with faces!

From makeup to clothes to packing the right shoes - to OMG where is my camera charger and my mini-mouse for my netbook? Of course, the hubby keeps me on track and organized, but do I take the time to remember that? NO! I'd much rather panic that I can't find the email with my online airline confirmation!

How often do you balk at things, specifically new foods or a change of plans? This weekend my daughter and I went on a trip into Manhattan with her Girl Scout troop. The weather when we left that morning didn't look promising, so being the prepared Girl Scout myself - I carried jackets and an umbrella along for the ride. (But, did I put them in a nice, convenient bag? No, would I really be that organized?)

We took the train into Penn Station and five minutes off the train and I knew I was in for a long day of lugging these things over my arm. We emerged from Penn and our group of 14 decided it was in our best interests to take cabs to the Circle Line Pier. Good choice, I was thrilled and would never balk.

Three hours later, our group got off the boat and now needed to walk about 10 city blocks to the restaurant we'd chosen to take the girls for dinner. A limo driver tried to convince us that our party of 14 would fit in his limo - it was old, had only two seats in the back and he suggested the 7 girls sit on the floor between the adults. Um. No thanks! While the girls thought it would be a fun adventure - I guess at 11 safety isn't a major concern? All seven adults balked at that plan!

We walked.

After having to find a bathroom along the way, and stopping briefly at the Hell's Kitchen Farmer's Market (which was really fun and had the most amazing pickles!) we finally found ourselves at our destination.

Dinner was great, the girls had a blast and we ended our day at the Rippley's Believe-it-not Museum (where I finally broke down and bought a totebag to haul my umbrella and jackets!) Back at Penn Station around 8pm, the Hagen-Daz ice cream called out to all of us and we loaded up with cones and cups before racing to catch the train home. No one balked at that decision!

Summer is here. The kids are home from school and enjoying carefree days of doing nothing or everything - whatever their hearts desire.

Do you remember those days? Days of waking up late, staying up even later, and then spending your day with no agenda?

One would think that being a writer I would embrace the summer and enjoy the kids not being on the school-year schedule.

One would think that being a writer I would embrace the summer and be just as carefree as the kids.

WRONG!

For some reason the summer totally stresses me out. MY schedule is off. I feel guilty being at the computer all day trying desperately to weave my plot, solve conflicts (and let's not even talk about the love scenes!) while the kids living in the moment.

So, after a sleepless night last night (and yes some sleepwalking and talking were involved!) I've come to the conclusion my stress isn't good for anyone - not me, not the hubby and certainly not my kids!

I've decided to give myself permission to step away from the computer and the writing for a little bit each day. I decided to say "YES" to something different. It's definitely going to mean some later nights writing and plotting - but if it reduces the stress during the day, that's a good thing.

This morning I'm thinking about the Jim Carrey movie, Yes Man. (Probably because it's been on cable lately and for some reason it's stuck in my head.)

Carl is a man stuck in a life he's not happy with, he's lost the woman he thought he loved, he's no fun to be around and his friends are worried about him.

He attends a seminar (okay, more like is dragged to a seminar) where he's told his life will change if he embraces the idea of "YES!" He leaves the seminar and immediately finds himself with a choice to make - he says yes (because it's a movie and there would be no plot if he didn't, but that's beside the point...) and his life takes on an interesting twist.

Now, let's be honest, this is a Jim Carrey movie - it's not deep and certainly not serious, but the more you watch it, the more you think about the idea. What opportunites are out there waiting for you if you say yes to something today instead of no? What will change in your life if you do somethinig different - could it be something good? Say yes to the blue cheese dressing instead of the lo-cal italian. Say yes to the extra lap around the block today while walking with the kids - you never know what they might tell you in those added minutes of alone, undivided time.

So what do you think, can you slow down for the summer? Do you have a way to combat the stress and live in the moment, even if just for an hour or two? Can you say "YES" to something different today?

As a published author I've found myself a minion in the Google army and their attempt take over the world. Yes, I am addicted to the "Google Alerts!"

Never heard of a Google Alert?

Let me enlighten you. From your Google account (and don't tell me you don't have one - doesn't everyone have AT LEAST one gmail account?) you can set up an alert for just about anything you want to track on the web. I've got things like the titles of my books, my publisher, my name, etc.

Through the wonders of Google, I get an email everytime one of those things I've got an alert set for - gets Googled or is written about somewhere on the web! Reviews - I don't miss them! Blog posts with my name or book title - I see them!
I've been a bad blogger lately and I have only my dreams to blame. My dream of being a published author has put me on a path of deadlines and dreams of plots and characters traits. While this is a busy time of year for anyone with kids who have finals, half-days at school and graduations - I can't put aside my deadlines and dreams. So like every other mom out there, the juggling begins.

Which means a neglected blog.

So to keep you entertained take the quiz and let me know what kind of dreamer you are - it's fun and painless, I promise! Also, over the summer months I'm planning to focus more on what YOU, my readers want from a romance author/mom blog. Each post will have a rating system at the end - either a thumbs up or down or number of stars you can assign to how much you like that type of post. Please take a second to click and let me know! (Or comment and tell me what you want to see/read!)
